We saw last week what the limits of the modern writer are : living in an inexplicably frenetic and multimedia world reduces the time dedicated to writing. Today's writer works everywhere, but very little on the sheet of paper. Many complain about the lack of time available to write . Today we work and study, but once upon a time we also worked and studied. It is also true that today, especially for those who live in big cities like Rome, the risk of taking an hour or a half to go to work is great. 3 hours a day wasted just going to work. The excuse of missing time In many cases, lack of time is just an excuse. If you have time to do a series of useless tasks a day, you also have time to write, if writing is really what you want.
But if there is no time, then you have to find it. Or, better yet, cut it out. Or both. Let's see how. #1 – Get up very early in the morning Leo Babauta is the blogger behind the scenes of «Zen Habits». Some of you know him, some of you don't. But this is not the point. The point is that Leo Babauta gets up every morning at 4:30 . According to a friend of mine, 4:30 only exists in the afternoon and at night, 4:30 in the morning does not exist. Maybe so, after all at 4:30 the sun is still sleeping. But it doesn't do anything. It is night Special Data outside and there is silence. There is silence in the house. The world is a limbo of cotton wool and ghosts, and you are writing in a cocoon of concentration. I would like to get up at 5 in the morning . I am not joking.
If I manage to change my life and live in the countryside, my alarm will ring at 5. Leo Babauta recommends not making drastic changes and setting the alarm 15 or 20 minutes earlier than usual for a few days, to get used to it. I prefer drastic changes instead. I got up at 8, then decided on 7:30. Finally I set the alarm back to 6:30. I got used to it right away. It is pleasant, especially in winter, to stay under the duvet. But when I hear my phone vibrating, I just get up. I imposed it on myself and I follow my dictates. My day is longer than before . I gained time, but I didn't take it away from sleep. Before, I slept too much, also because I'm not sleepy in the morning now, so it means that 7 hours or so are enough for me to sleep. I don't expect you to get up at 5, but you can set your alarm back by half an hour in the meantime. And that would be 30 minutes earned per day for writing.
